ripped WAV cuts off at (quiet) end

Post by dougmiller » Sun Apr 27, 2014 12:58 am

I have a WAV (ripped from a CD) which has a very quiet ending. In Windows Media player and in browsers (Chrome & FF), it plays to the end ok. However, in SCS 11.2.6, it appears to cut off just before the track has completely faded. There is no 'end time' set for the cue and the timeline carries on well past the visual display of the wav file, but the audio is cutting off prematurely.
The file is here (please forgive the dreadful quality) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/139 ... ew-rip.wav
Any thoughts appreciated

This .wav file cuts off during the fade for me regardless of what I am using to play it. I've used SCS 11.2.6, the dropbox link in Firefox and Adobe Audition CS6. It's consistent with every playback software. Take a harder listen to it when you play it in Windows Media Player.
I zoomed in on the waveform end in Audition and attached the image to this post. As you can see the end fade is chopped off. You should listen to the source CD and see if that is how the song ends. On the CD, if there is a song after that, does that song begin as this one fades?

Thanks for your thoughts on this. The .cda plays fine, doesn't cut off and is not cross faded into the next track. The 'solution' I've found seems to be simply using a 'better' ripper. This WAV was created using EXACT AUDIO COPY by NCH - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/139 ... k%2008.wav
As this screenshot shows - not chop at the end Image

Again, thanks for your time - it seems I will have to re-rip some files using better software to get acceptable results.

Happily, it has to be said - this is no fault of SCS's (not that I thought it would be!) - but it does demonstrate that you get different results from different ripping softwares.

You didn't mention what software you used for the original ripping, but there is definitely an issue with Windows Media Player ripping to WMA files. WMP adds some silence to the end of tracks ripped to WMA format, but I haven't found that to be an issue with tracks ripped to WAV format. See Gapless Playback in the SCS Help for more info.

Hello Mike,
Yeah - should have mentioned that the original rip was done in Windows Media Player - but you half guessed that! Bless Microsoft!

On a related topic: When editing audio file paths in the editor, is there any kind of caching taking place? It's just that I found when experimenting with different versions of the rip, SCS reloads the graphic display of the file, but when clicking the test button it (appears) to play the previously loaded version. Saving the edit and playing the file in the main window indicates that the new audio file is being played, but only a restart seems to fully load the currently selected file.

I'm more than happy to be told this is my imagination and that the main problem I have here is working with a rather poor audio file, but if there is some kind of caching happening, is there a easy way to clear it?
