VU meters not working with ASIO drivers (fix in 10.8.6)

Post by newlifedrama » Wed Oct 05, 2011 11:00 am

I am just getting going with SCS, and am really happy with it so far. I use a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 USB sound box to output 6 channels of sound to a mixer for theatre work. The VU meters show the levels of the 3 pairs of stereo output fine with the PC speakers as output, but when I switch to the ASIO drivers for the Scarlett box, the meters do not work at all. I am using the SCS internal mixer as required for ASIO drivers.

This is not a critical problem, as I can view the levels on the mixer board. But it sure is nice to see them on the SCS display so that when something isn't working it is easier to figure out where the problem is.

p.s. I am also having various sound clicks with the Scarlett box on certain computers (1 out of 3 so far). I believe it is a USB interference issue, as on one computer the USB wireless adapter created amazingly scratchy sound when it was in use, until I moved it to the opposite side of the computer (e.g. the front instead of the back). If anyone has had similar problems please share your experiences. I am questioning my choice of a USB sound box, but man it sure is handy to be able to just unplug it and move it.

The VU meters should be working OK. Check they haven't been disabled. To do this click the Display Options toolbar button and select VU / Frequency / Wave Display. Make sure you have VU (Levels) checked. btw, only VU levels are available with ASIO - not Frequency Graphs etc.

Clicks can be a problem with ASIO although I don't have any experience of the Scarlett box. There is a troubleshooting section covering ASIO problems in the SCS Help.

I checked and they are enabled as VU meters (I cycled thru all of the displays, and none work). It is too bad the freq. graphs are not available with ASIO, but I can certainly live without that. The VU meters would be nice though. This problem occured with the previous release 10.8.3 and the newest one as well, 10.8.4

I've emailed you details of a trace version I'd like you to run.

I just wanted to finish off this thread and say that Mike eventually tracked the problem down (if I remember right it was a bug in the BASS audio lib) and got it fixed. It is now working fine for me. It required a new version of the BASS libs, so I don't know if this has been officially released yet.

Fixed in 10.8.6. The problem was caused by an incompatibility between the Focusrite ASIO driver and the BASS ASIO library. An updated version of the BASS ASIO library which fixes this incompatibility is included in 10.8.6.
