Multi Channel Sound Card

I would like to add an external multichannel sound card to utilize more than 3 channels that I can currently get using SCS and my headphone jack. Is an external card the best way to go? If so any specific brand? USB or firewire?

Any help would be appreciated.

An external soundcard will generally give you better quality and functionality than on onboard card/chip. See the forum topic supported audio devices for recommendations.
