[In 11.7.0]User choice to monitor all Incoming MIDI messages

Post by Dan » Mon Feb 12, 2018 9:57 am

Mike, in earlier (much earlier) versions of SCS, incoming MIDI messages were always displayed at the bottom of the control screen. Even when particular MIDI messages were not intended to be acted upon by SCS, the MIDI message still displayed. That always gave me a warm fuzzy that my lighting console was in communication with SCS. However recent versions of SCS have eliminated this default functionality.

I realize I can go into the Editor/Devices/Cue Control/Test Midi Inputs, to verify the connectivity, but that is a one-time, pre-show check. Once a show is started, no further visual displays are available. I've recently had the opportunity to run a dual-laptop SoundFX heavy show, where I ran two laptops running SCS in parallel with a split MIDI signal from my lighting console. It fired SCS cues on both laptops simultaneously so that if one crashed, I could simply switch my audio inputs to the backup. But occasionally, one of the laptops would drop its connection to the lighting console, and I wouldn't know it until the sound didn't play. So, when I switched to the alternate laptop, I wouldn't be 100% confident that it would be ready to go.

What I would like to have is the option to choose to have SCS display ALL incoming MIDI messages at the bottom of the screen again (like it used to do), so that I can be more comfortable that my computers are still connected to my lighting console. By seeing the messages on non-firing cues, I can visually confirm that my computers are still connected.

Ideally, this would simply be a check box in SCS Options, so that users who DON'T want to see the messages can choose not to see them, and those who do, can have it enabled.

So I'm not the only one who misses this. I support that wish.

Included in SCS 11.7.0 RC7, although currently the Help file has not been updated for this. There was previously an Editing Option to Display all MIDI input messages, but as that only applied to the editor this option has now been moved to Display Options.

Mike, I've installed and started using 11.7.0 (Build 2018/03/20 08:49), and I found the Display Option for Display all MIDI Input Messages. But checking the box doesn't seem to have any effect. I tried restarting SCS, but still no change. MIDI messages are properly being responded to, but no MIDI messages are displayed. I tend to run my shows in Design mode, but even when I switched to Performance mode, no messages are displayed.

In your post, you mentioned this functionality would be available in 11.7.0 RC7 - is it possible I'm not running the RC7 release yet?

Dan, I've checked here with the same version of SCS and MIDI messages are displayed, whether or not they are valid for the current MIDI Cue Control settings. Could you email me a diagnostic file? You can create this file by selecting 'Create Diagnostic File' from the drop-down menu displayed when you click the Help button in the main window. The file will be saved in a folder named "SCS Diagnostics" under "Documents" or "My Documents".

Also, please tell me what MIDI messages you are sending that are not being displayed in the SCS status line.

My show file is at the theater, with the light board that sends the messages, so I'll need to get the diagnostic file from there. But in the meantime, I have a screen shot of my MIDI message setup. That may have pertinent information that will help triage before I get the diagnostic to you.

In 11 7 0User choice to monitor all Incoming MIDI messages

I am looking for my paging to have an option that says View All after the list of page numbers so a customer could click that and it would show all products in the category. Any ideas?

Is this a new topic? Please provide more details of your request, eg what do you mean by 'paging'?
