MIDI functionality

Post by Nino » Mon Jun 05, 2006 6:05 pm

Mike - firstly, thanks for a fabulous piece of kit :D

I frequently use the hot keys function triggered by a MIDI keyboard. Is it possible to make non-latching triggers - i.e. allow the cue to run only as long as the key is active (with perhaps configurable decay option). This might also include looped cues such as a ringing telephone loop - the loop continues while the trigger is active and ceases immediately on release.

Continuing with the hot key theme, would it be possible for multiple instances of the same cue? At present triggering a cue stops the current instance and re-starts it. I would like to see an option to allow the hot key cue to play without interrupting the playing instance. For example generating overlaying multiple thunder claps from the one cue/trigger.

On a slightly different note: Is it possible to automatically skip cues? In the demo file the intermission sub (50) has a cue (50.1) to fade out intermission. If (50) plays through to end then 50.1 is still waiting to be triggered. An autostart cue added after the end of (50) that skips to (6) or triggers (50.1) would be useful.

Nino,

Regarding the non-latching triggers, are you referring to using MIDI Note On to start the cue and MIDI Note Off to stop the cue? And by configurable decay do you mean commencing a fade out instead of immediately stopping the cue?

I've had other requests for running multiple instances of playing a hot key cue. I'll have another look at what's involved.

SCS deliberately does not auto-skip completed cues. The problem with auto-skipping is the danger of activating the wrong cue if the cue being played naturally ends at about the same time that you want to activate the stop cue. If you activate the stop cue just before the audio cue ends all is OK, but if the audio cue ended just before you activated the stop cue then, with auto-skip occurring, you might activate the next audio file cue instead. By not auto-skipping, the procedure is consistent, whether or not the audio cue ends naturally.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Yes, I guess NOTE ON and NOTE OFF is what I mean. I'm not overly conversant with MIDI but to allow the cue to play only while the midi key is held down. And yes, I mean a configurable fade, perhaps both in and out? What about taking into account velocity to vary the volume too?

I use audio samplers which provide such options but would prefer my "eggs all in one basket" so to speak. SCS is a brilliant and easy to use piece of software but, as we all know, theatre is never simple and no show is like any other

Regarding the auto-skip of cues, I can appreciate what you say. I'm using a midi trigger workaround to auto trigger a stop cue which works perfectly well for me.

Regards,

Nino
