Mouse control in 10.6.1 (fix in 10.6.2)

Post by jmgordon » Wed Sep 09, 2009 11:57 pm

Mike,
Not having had to create a show for a couple of months, I have only just come across a change in editing behaviour, which personally I find a little irritating.
In the past, when editing start and end points in the graphic display, one would select the 'Start/End' radio button and this would remain active as one replayed the track. Now, as soon as one clicks 'Play' the mouse control reverts to 'Curr.Position', necessitating an extra mouse click before continuing editing. Checking back it seems that the action changed between 10.5.0 and 10.5.1 RC1. Deliberate or law of unintended consequences? I can no longer see whether you mentioned this in the announcement about 10.5.1 RC1.

It was a deliberate change, Malcolm, although I'll consider undoing the change. I found that often I would set a start, end or loop point, then while playing the cue decide to move the 'current position', only to find that I moved the start point, etc. But I can see that while establishing the required start point, etc, it would be better to leave the mouse control setting as is.

Mike,
I suppose, if I'm honest, I should confess that I have done the same on occasion. Perhaps others have views.

I can see both sides but on balance I would prefer to go back to the old way. When setting start/end/loop points in the past I have dragged the progress bar at the bottom to hear various parts of the track. That leaves the selected action and the start/end points unchanged.

I have also made the mistake of clicking inside the waveform while playing the cue, only to change my start or end point. However I would also prefer the old way (i.e. don't change cursor mode when playing the cue).

The real issue here for me is that the playback slider is not directly under the waveform as it would be in Goldwave, and having the slider down at the bottom of the screen isn't really too useful down there. Mike, if you wanted to move that slider function up and under the waveform and display it more like a traditional audio editor, it would eliminate the need to have a "Curr Position" option at all. (for that matter, move the playback control buttons up there somewhere as well ....)

Thanks. John

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I will undo the change for the next release. I'm not sure about re-arranging the layout, but take the point that it would help to have the progress bar below the waveform.
