Thanks so much Malcom and Kevin. This actually makes for a great guide to cable connections. I'm just starting out and this has already cleared a lot of things up for me. I know this is completely off topic but I figured I would just say how much this helped even outside the original topic.

laptop use and general questions
If I am buying a laptop AND a M-Audio 410 do I need to be concerned with the type of internal sound card that comes with the laptop or does the 410 like override that sound card? ie. does the laptop sound card need to be of a certain caliber to send quality signals to the 410.

The laptop soundcard is immaterial when you are using the M-Audio FireWire 410. The built-in card and driver will still be available; in SCS you specify which device (soundcard) you wish to use. When setting up the program, you have to have the 410 connected and switched on (it's not necessary to have an output connected) for the driver to load. The device will then appear as a device in the SCS Options menu and you can allocate the various outputs. If at any time you start SCS without the 410 connected the program will report that the 410 is not found and it is selecting the default (i.e. the internal) soundcard. You can still carry on setting up the cue list with the devices named in the cues, but they will all play through the default. (This will all be a lot clearer when you have the program up and running).
The 410 has one MIDI In and one MIDI Out, so the laptop does not need to have them. You may find it helpful to look at the 410 manual here.

What kinds of multi-channel devices can SCS work with?
I have used SCS in a limited fashion for about a year now. I have a project coming up in which I would like to use multi-speaker output of the sound files. I have been looking at the standard list of audio devices like M-Audio 410 and Roland UA-100 and so forth. The problem is that it seems each audio company calls them something different, so just doing a broad search is a difficult process.
What I'd like to get is info on exactly what devices can be controlled by SCS, and whether the USB or Firewire interface is the preferred medium. I'm trying not to blow my bank on a device at this early stage, so any info anyone has would be great. Thank you.
