Having serious problems with 9.2.6 and 9.1.5

Post by drobkin » Fri Sep 29, 2006 12:04 pm

Hi Mike and community-

I am running SCS 9.2.6 on a Dell Inspiron laptop (4 weeks old) with 1 gig of memory and a 1.65 ghz processor. I am putting the signal through a Presonus Firebox firewire adaptor. There are about 85 cues in the show and we open on Saturday.

The software/hardware combo seems unable to output a clean signal. I am getting warbles and processing dropouts with every other cue. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Dave

Can you open Task Manager and let me know what CPU and VM Size is being used by SCS when you get drop-outs, etc? (You may need to add the column 'Virtual Memory Size' to the display as I don't think it is included by default.)

Tomorrow, I've had to deal with lighting all night.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

I did not find any information under "CPU" in Task Manager. It just read "00"

The VM was 118,960K
Peak Memory 115,500 K
Memory 69,000 K

Doesn't appear to be anything unexpected there. I see from another thread that you may have ditched the Presonus. If so, is performance OK now?

Yes. I went straight out of the headphone jackinto the mixer and the quality inproved.

I would still like ot use the presonus for another, multi-channel project, but that one is a long way off.

Any ideas about what makes the performance suffer through the firewire connection?

Was using an external Creative sound card with 8.5 and had similar problems until I went into control panel and disabled my onboard Inspiron sound card. That eliminated the instability I was getting while trying to use my external card.

Presonus Firebox

Dave,

Have you since been able to sort out issues with the Presonus? I was considering buying one primarily for SCS purposes, but I am now wary. Should I avoid it?

Could other users out there with experience of using SCS on a laptop with an external soundcard/interface offer their recommendations?

Cheers,

external audio card for laptop

I've had good luck with the M-Audio firewire 410. Beyond all of its audio routing capabilities you also get two ch. of mic. pres and two headphone outs. -md.

It's most likely a Presonus/FireWire issue with your computer, and nothing to do with SCS.

Taking a look at the Presonus website support FAQs, there might be a Windows XP Sp2 issue, for other problems you might have to email them. I also have no problems with a M-Audio FireWire 410, but their website highlights a lot of possible issues with FireWire, including different versions of 1394 and the performance of different chipsets. You might have to go into Device Manager to determine exactly which FireWire chip and host controller you have in your Dell and follow up performance issues with Presonus.

Presonus Boxes

Post by drobkin » Wed Oct 11, 2006 2:34 pm

I dumped the presonus box and went straight out of the headphone jack. I do not know what the firewire issues might be, but I had the same problems with an Intel IMAC running the 4-channel M-Audio box and Live!LE. I suspect it has to do with firewire settings etc, but I can't recommend the Presonus box at this time. When I get the computer back in 3 weeks I can give you more information, but I am thinking of returning it and buying the MacBookPro
