Any dif in retrieval time ?

Post by ozstar » Tue Jun 27, 2023 9:34 am

Hello again !

Just wondering if it is advisable to have all source files in the one folder on the primary drive or a SD card, or whether it makes any difference in video auto start retrieval times.

For example I have a string of mp3 files which are sourced from the SCS project folder on the primary drive which also holds the Win 10 o/s and then an auto start video file which is in a folder on an SD card.

This sort of scenario repeats itself a few times.

Although I haven't noticed anything, I would like to set it up as best as I can.

My thoughts were based on 1) the knowledge of Win 10's background work and 2) the supposed time lapse sourcing from an SD card.

I am using a Surface Pro tablet/keyboard, not the Surface actual laptop.

Thanks.

I generally recommend you have all your media files on your computer's hard drive (HDD) or, preferably, solid state drive (SSD). Removable drives are just something else you have to be sure are connected properly and also that have not been left behind!

Thank you.

Yes I actually have a copy of the folder on both the primary HD and the SSD as well as on a USB and ext HD, so well backed up and sort of ready for any breakdown.

I just wondered whether anyone had found that the read time was any quicker from the HD than the SSD, as some of my MP4 video files are pretty large, but so far I can't detect any difference.

I hope we're not getting confused between SD Card (Secure Digital card) and SSD (Solid State Drive). Theoretically, SSD access would be faster than HDD access, but I don't know about SD card access times.

Having said that, note that the audio and video drivers used by SCS will buffer data so access times should not be an issue.

Ah Haaa.

I'm from old school, so still just refer to the drive as HD although it is actually SSD and the ext is a 1TB M.2 SSD.

My inquiry actually was for the SD card against the SSD which I have in the Surface Pro, however maybe how SCS is buffering the data is why I don't notice any difference.

Thanks again.
