some examples from other software

Hi all,

maybe it is helpfull to look at other software. I work with Ableton Live, qLab, MadMapper, Onyx and Steinberg Nuendo and Wavelab on a daily basis. I like the dark look they have.


Ableton Live: Simple and informative mixer view. I like the edges.


qLab: I like the idea that there is no seperate editor window. All happens within the main window (Edit and Show mode). I don´t like the round faders, round buttons and round level meters. too playfull. Dark colour is nice and rich of contrast. I like the notes window at the top for information when the cue has to be started or something else. I nearly never use the GO, NEXT, PAUSE,.... buttons with the mouse... yeah because of reasons and mostly there is a hotkey. but surely nice to have feature when there are touchscreens.


Onyx: This is a Lighting Software i use. I would never stop using, but i wanted to show the simple and clear appearance that i like very much. touch friendly aswell.

MadMapper: I like the handles of the cornerpin/keystone. Simple and clear. At the bottom is the Scene/Cue window. Maybe for future hotkeys colum? Maybe with the ability for cycle round robin (one hotkey triggers different sounds --> example old doorbell with different length and intensitiy)



Subcue appearence in the show window maybe like this (if globally activated)

MainCue1
---> SubCue1
---> SubCue2
MainCue2
---> SubCue1
---> SubCue2

So it is possible to see the sub cues, but it is totally clear, that a sub cue is a subcue

Important for me for a fresh look and feel would be that there is no visible redrawing of the GUI. That is sometimes really concerning how glitchy it looks.

Thanks for these examples, tocsin. I'm planning to start work on this early next year. There are a few functional enhancements I'm currently working on which I'd like to get completed before upgrading the GUI.

I like the combination of faders and level meters.

Please, functionality and ease of use, even on small screens, first. Fancy visuals second, by quite some way. The
audience can't see your fancy laptop screen, they can hear the wrong sound cue playing or see the actors waiting for a vital cue that hasn't happened.
It's vital to be able to react quickly if there are hiccups - on stage or off - during a show.

I'm quite happy with the UI the way it is, don't become like Windows and change things for the sake of it.
I want the package to work bug free if possible (it's almost there!) and be reliable. Forget the bells and whistles.
It might be a bit difficult for new users to assimilate but so is any software, once you get used to it it's easy and fast.
Changing the UI could easily alienate your existing user base.

Not that I don't like beautiful graphics but I agree with Boswell

SCS has the particularity of being as light as possible and that is essential for me
It's a bit similar to Reaper compared to cubase
much coarser certainly but much lighter and goes to the point
