SoundMan-Server

Post by Stuart Barry » Tue Oct 30, 2018 11:25 pm

I have been experimenting with using the trial version of SoundMan-Server to control the turning on and off of a live microphone attached to a Roland UA101 but have run into some issues.

I installed and set up SMS as per the instructions in the SCS Help file. Next I played a standard audio cue to check that sound came out through my defined SMS output device (UA101 output channel 1) correctly. Finaly I added 'mic on' and 'mic off' live input cues. When I tested the mic on cue, no sound came out and the VU meter in the test panel showed no signal. Only after using the SMS command SET CHANNEL i0 GAINDB 0 did the channel become active. The SCS documentation does not mention the need to do this and I imagine that SCS is supposed to control all such levels behind the scenes according to the values set in the live cue itself.

Having apparently got the channel to work by using the SMS command, I then operated first the mic on cue, which did indeed switch the channel on, followed by the mic off cue which appeared to turn the channel off as far as SCS was concerned i.e. the original cue was no longer showing Live and the L indicator in the Faders panel was extinguished. However, the channel actually remained on i.e. the microphone was still live. Even if I set the audio level to -infinity in the mic off cue, the channel was not switched off. Nor did pressing the Escape key to stop all cues have any effect.

The symptoms of the problem I am having suggest that SCS is not controlling the SMS input channel gain properly even though the Input Gain and Input Levels were all set to -3db. Surely it isn't necessary to use SMS commands to get SCS to produce any sound. What am I missing?

Stuart,

A log file will have been created and saved as a zip file in a folder named "SCS Logs" under "Documents" or "My Documents", and the name of the file includes a time-stamp indicating when the log started. Could you run a short test that demonstrates this problem? Then close SCS and email the relevant zipped log file, together with an explanation of what happened.

Setting up my environment to reproduce the issue I found that the mic on and mic off cues now worked as they are supposed to. On further investigation I think the problem was that in the SoundMan Server control panel I went and selected UA101 rather than SCSASIO from the drop-down panel rather than leaving this selection to occur automatically. Anyway I cannot reproduce the issue that I had yesterday.
