Pre-load failing to update in 10.6.3

Post by jmgordon » Fri May 28, 2010 6:04 am

Scenario: a lecture/entertainment illustrated with a large number of music clips, cued from the laptop with a presenter's wireless remote mouse. The manual activation is by right-clicking; the cursor is parked over the fade transport button of the active cue, so that a left click can action an early fade if necessary. I tend not to watch the screen.

The laptop is running SCS 10.6.3 with 2GB of RAM and the Max No. of Audio Files to Pre-Open set at the default 15. The particular show this week has 54 cues. When Cue 16 failed to run I looked at the screen and found it as showing as "Not Loaded", as were all the remaining cues. I had to quickly click on it in the Cue List to load it and the remaining cues (I thought). I then forgot and Cue 32 failed to run. Luckily I had left the cursor where it was (I had not needed to do an early fade) so a quick left click revived it. Forewarned, when Cue 48 came along I left-clicked in advance, and loaded the rest. In other words, the pre-loaded files were failing to update as each cue was played.

Any suggestions as to what is going on/wrong? We're doing a repeat tomorrow, so I'd like to avoid problems. The production folder is 1.72GB and 67 files (not all are used in the show), so 15 cues might add up to 400MB. The files vary from about 5MB to 68MB. I have tried since the show but failed to reproduce the effect, even when pausing between cues to simulate the performance. It seems not to matter whether the Editor is open in the background.

I have encountered this problem occasionally when running previous shows of this type (but with fewer cues) under earlier SCS versions and, occasionally, when doing sound effects for a play (when calling it as well, so it is high stress). Whatever the reason, I sometimes fail to notice the "Not Ready" before attempting to start the cue. What is needed is a colour warning. Is it feasible to have an additional option in the colour scheme to show when a cue is not loaded, or possibly a warning flag?

I could implement a warning like the 'lost focus' warning. This would be displayed if the 'Go' button is disabled but no 'exclusive' cue is playing. There may be a couple of other conditions associated with displaying the warning. However, if SCS can work out when to display this warning it should also be able to rectify it, eg by simulating clicking on the cue that is the 'next manual cue'.

Could you email me your cue file?

Cue file sent.

I don't think I would notice a disabled Go button. Perhaps the red cues that appear when an audio file can't be found would be obvious enough, anything to distinguish them from the Ready cues. Of course, as you say, eliminating the problem would be the ideal solution.
