Progress Line not moving on sound cue in design mode

On Sunday I was trying to select the exact start point in a piece of music for a dance reprise.
I drag the start bar to somewhere near to where the choreographer thinks it ought to be and start playing. The progress bar is not moving as it plays and so I don't know the current time offset. If I stop, then the progress bar does move to where it stopped, but it isn't moving along smoothly in time to the music.
This is v11.2.5 on Windows 7 64 bit, new Core i3 laptop, 4Gb RAM
