MP4 or not

Does SCS 10 (I have the latest 10.8.7) support MPEG 4 video files, or not? I found several posts saying it didn't, but if that's the case then why is there an MPEG-4 file type with the .mp4, .m4a, and .m4b file extensions when I go to browse for the video file in a video cue? I can't get it to play but the file type is there. There's also a .divx file type. Will it play those?

M4p will not play you need to convert it to an AVI or similar.
This topic is quite common and I would suggest you have a look at this post which I think will help you a lot the software recommended is excellent

Okay, thanks for confirming.
However, I still don't understand that if it doesn't support the format, why is the file type listed in the in the drop down when browsing for the video file? Attached is a screen shot showing what I mean.
If the program doesn't suppor the MPEG4 or DivX formats, remove them from the file type list to avoid user confusion.

See what your getting at, I think you will have to wait for Mike to explain this one, but it maybe that depending on what codec has been used to create the video file it may well work so all file tyes are listed.

I'll need to check each of those file types, but as an example, yes, SCS does support .mp4 but you might need to install the
Haali Media Splitter. I've just checked SCS running an mp4 file using the DirectShow video option in SCS - worked great. See the Toubleshooting section on Video Problems in the SCS Help for more info.

Well, this is new. I understand video file formats and codecs, but I've never heard of this "splitter" stuff before. What does this "splitter" thing do compared to the normal codec?
As it stands now on my computer (without this Haali Media Splitter), MP4 files will play just fine in my Windows Media Player, but they won't play in SCS at all. I tried both DirectShow and XVideo. SCS actually generates a run-time error when it tries to play the MP4 files I have. They were created by Handbrake and I tried both H.264 and plain MPEG4 encoding and SCS won't play it either way. This is Windows 7 64-bit if that makes any difference.
I'm not really worried about it at this point. I converted the files for AVI files and they play fine in SCS in that format.
