Pan errors

Hello,

I have a problem getting any pan setting to work on our current show. I've never had this problem before. I feel sure that I have seen it mentioned on these forums but I can't find it now.

I am using an Echo Layla3G soundcard using WDM drivers on XP running SCS 10.7.5. I have one device set as a stereo output and either side of a second device as two mono outputs. Using the stereo pair to play back stereo files the pan setting reverts to centre as soon as the cue starts playing regardless of how the pan is set in the cue editor. If I manually set the pan to fully right or left after the cue has started the file continues to play through both sides of the stereo pair.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Maurice

Update: I knew I'd seen mention of this somewhere - the help file! Oops!

So, panning works fine when using the SCS internal mixer but doesn't work when not using it. The help file suggests that, without the internal mixer, pan should work OK on the first stereo pair only, but in my case it doesn't work even then.

That should work OK. I've emailed you details of a tracing version I'd like you to run, so I can check the flags set in audio library function calls.

Thanks for the trace files. The problem seems to have arisen due to the following change that was made in SCS 10.7.3:

Some sound card drivers erroneously report the number of outputs/speakers available as 2 when in fact there are more. If SCS finds 2 outputs reported, it then tries to use the Windows Control Panel setting (eg 6 outputs if configured as a 5.1 system). However, some sound card drivers do not allow you to configure the speaker arrangement in the Windows Control Panel. So you may force SCS to assume 8 outputs by selecting the Audio Driver option 'Force enabling of speaker assignments'. Note that this flag has always been available but due to various underlying software changes the flag has not always been implemented. It is now implemented.

To fix the problem, go to General Options / Permanent Options / Audio Driver and clear the checkbox 'Force enabling of speaker assignments'. Then click OK and close and restart SCS. You should now find the pan works OK.
