Have a look at the SCS mixer settings. These are under General Options / Permanent Options / Mixer Levels. What faders are displayed and are the faders at maximum? Note that there is also a drop-down list for selecting the required mixer.

the mixer is set to the output for my laptop and there are 2 faders displayes "Master" and "Wave/Mp3" both faders are set to maximum (0db) i have tried the other options in the mixer selections but still no sound output.
Also when SCS is open and i go into my sound card properties and try to play any test tone from it SCS somehow has managed to stop it playing any sound. but i can play music from windows media player while scs is open. when scs is closed the test tone from sound card properties plays...?
thanks

This problem has been solved by two things. Firstly, Tom got sound OK when using a pre-release of 10.3.2, although this is strange because there is no change in the audio playback logic between 10.3.1 and 10.3.2. However, the laptop was performing very slowly - taking about 4 times as long to startup SCS as my laptop, using the same cue file and settings, and my laptop is slightly
less powerful than Tom's. The performance issue was then fixed by optimising Vista for audio.
Information on optimising your PC for audio is now available on our
FAQ page. See Q7.
