10.8.5 - stuttering fade during short loop

Post by d_korman » Wed Oct 26, 2011 7:59 pm

Hi Mike,

Another little niggle for you to look at:

I have a cue with a short (0.77 seconds) loop to simulate a skipping 78 RPM record. I need to fade that cue at the end of the scene so I have set a standard 1.5 second fade. if I trigger the fade before the looped section, the fade is smooth (thought the screen update is very noticeable). If I trigger the fade during the loop (which is what I need to do) then the fade stutters at one point, and hangs for just under 1 second at around -40dB and then completes. This is very noticeable, as the cur is still audible at -40dB.

An observation - SCS version 10 seems to update the bottom section of the display in a much less smooth way than earlier version, as it appears to re-paint from top down rather than scroll the contents. In any event, the subjective feel of that repaint makes the whole operation feel jerky, to me at least.

Thanks,

Dave

I guess the problem is being caused by the length of the loop being shorter than the fade time.

Assuming you're currently using a SFR cue set to 'fade out then stop' to stop the audio, a possible work arround might be to set the SFR cue to 'release from loop and play to end', then set the end point in the audio cue to 1.5s after the loop and the audio cue's fade out time to 1.5s as well.
It's not ideal as the time when the cue completes will vary by the length of the loop, but as the loop is so short this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Also durring the fade the record will stop skipping, but as the track is fading out at the end of a scene, I doubt your audience will notice.
Anyway it wont be as obvious as a stutter and at least you'll get a smooth fade.

Cheers
Richard

That sounds like a viable work-around until the problem is fixed, I'll give it a try.

Thanks,

Dave

Edit.. It almost works OK, except that the track right after the loop is a loud section - I can fix that by editing the sound file and putting some silence in after the loop point (once the director is happy with the position of the loop :) )
