ASIO Driver "Greyed Out"

Post by digitaldan » Wed May 25, 2011 7:51 pm

Hi,

I'm currently using the demo version. I'll be buying it once I get my 8 channel output interface tomorrow but as the "ASIO Driver" button is greyed out in the sound options, I can't really test it. Is there something I need to untick or something that I'm missing before I can use the ASIO Driver and therefore control all of the 8 outputs on an interface?

Or is this something I'll be able to do without the need for ASIO?

And on a side note... will linking 6 cues to start at the same time and send to the mixer for separate level control crash my laptop? Or is that something that SCS can do easily?

Cheers! :)

SCS has a component known as the 'internal mixer' which by default is disabled. The internal mixer provides some extra functionality but in some configurations can cause sound quality problems. Part of this extra functionality is ASIO support, so if you want to use ASIO then you will need to enable the internal mixer, which can be done via General Options / Permanent Options / Audio Driver.

However, you may be able to use all 8 outputs using WDM, but it depends how your device driver publishes it's outputs. Some drivers will publish the outputs as stereo pairs, which is ideal for SCS. So when you've installed your 8-channel output interface, open SCS, go to the Editor and select the Production Properties. Then see what is displayed in the drop-down list under Physical Device.

Linking 6 cues to start at the same time is no problem for SCS, but to get tight syncing of the cues I strongly recommend not using the internal mixer (which also means not using ASIO). The reason for this recommendation is that when not using the internal mixer, the 6 files will be linked in the audio library, but this feature is not available when using the internal mixer.

If you have any difficulty getting this working, please advise what 8-channel output interface you are using; which version of Windows you are using (XP, Win7, etc), and whether or not you are using the SCS internal mixer. Also, for more info on linked audio files please go to the Help and see The Editor / Audio File Cues / Linked Audio Files.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I'll try that! :) Looking at getting this interface http://www.inta-audio.com/computer-musi ... rface-p150 so fingers crossed all the outputs are WDM stereo pairs because as we want to use it for a live click to the drummer, none of the tracks can afford to be out of sync.

I've only experienced one bug. You can't sync 2 cues if they're the same waveform and same length. I tricked this by duplicating the file and adjusting the length... but I just wondered if there was any reason for this bug. The file just says "Linked" and doesn't appear to be playing, which was the reason for wanting to try ASIO... Put simply the following will run together:

- A sound file playing to the drummer (Stereo Pair 1+2)
- A sound file playing to the drummer containing the click (Stereo Pair 1+2)
- The backing track (Stereo Pair 3+4)
- Additional backing track components (Stereo Pair 5+6)

All these are to run together so if WDM is the best option for this, then I'll go for it :)

Hmmmm... Did what you said for the ASIO thing. Still greyed out... and yes... I closed and reopened it.

The ASIO Control Panel button is only enabled if SCS has initialised the ASIO driver, and that only occurs if you have assigned ASIO outputs to your SCS devices in Production Properties. SCS cannot enable the button prior to initialising the ASIO driver as that is a requirement of the BASSASIO audio library used by SCS. So have you assigned ASIO outputs to your SCS devices, or are you wanting to access the ASIO control panel prior to assigning the ASIO outputs?

Regarding the problem of syncing 2 cues if they're the "same waveform and same length", do you mean using the same file in both cues, or 2 identical files? Could you email me your cue file (the .scs file)?

I'll send it when I get home :) and yes, about the ASIO. That makes sense! I'll test it in a few hours time.
