M-audio firewire 1814 question-urgent
Hello all, I've got a show going up in less than a week and have set a theatre co. up with my design on their toshiba laptop (don't have exact specs but is certainly more than capable of handling SCS) connected to an M-Audio 1814 Firewire card via the 4-6 pin cable through the Toshiba's on board Firewire card. The issue (and it is completely random abd unpredictable) is a loud snapping sound that will occur aloing with the audio. It is alarming when it happens to say the least. I've never experienced this with PCI cards and have asked this question on here before about another desktop system using an M-Audio 410. Any advice would be most welcome!!! I'm still old school and running SCS 8.4.6 -Mike Doherty
Hi,
Just picked up the following at the m-audio website. This is actually in response to a usb device ... but could be the same solution ??

CPU Throttling - Pops & clicks / noise bursts with Laptops
Q: I have a Windows Laptop and get pops & clicks or unpredictable noise bursts in my audio signal when using an external audio interface. Why is that and how can I fix this?
A: There are a number of possible reasons for pops & clicks and-/or noise bursts in the audio, but one of the most common reasons on laptops is CPU throttling. Depending on the brand of your laptop, this might be called "SpeedStep" or "SmartCPU" on your system. In simple terms, what this does is to reduce the speed of the CPU to preserve energy whenever the system load allows this. Unfortunately, CPU throttling can have a bad effect on any active audio playback- or recording task which will be audible as noise bursts or pops & clicks.
Most Laptop computers will allow to turn this feature off. Please check the following link for tips on the subject:

If your computer doesn't allow to turn SpeedStep off or if you are not satisfied with the extend of control that is given in Windows XP to configure SpeedStep, you may want to have a look at the following link. The utility that can be found on this page gives more advanced control over the Speed Step functions.

Popping Sound
Mike,
In addition to the Speed Stepping solution mentioned above, check that all power management is disabled. I have a Motu Ultralite which runs over firewire, and some power management features will cause it to crackle for a period of time (in particular, hard drives entering/resuming from standby will cause the audio to glitch).
