[Mod 11.8.3.2] Fades ending abruptly

Post by jetam » Tue Jun 30, 2020 9:42 am

Hello!
I'm not quite sure whether this is a bug report or a feature request, but the main thing that's been annoying me since I started using SCS years ago is that a fade out stops at -74 dB or so. If the cue volume is set close to 0 dB this isn't a problem, but when a cue is playing at -54, a fade out will reduce the level by only 20 dB before stopping the cue. While it's possible to adjust the levels of audio files by using a DAW or use a mixing console to do the fades, this totally kills the workflow.

Ending a fade out at a certain level makes sense but IMO this level should be relative to the clip level before the fade out, not an absolute value. If this is too difficult to implement, at least the trim control (-10, -20 ...) should be independent of the fader so that if you had the trim at -40 and fader at -4, the fade out would still reduce the level by 70 dB before ending.

BTW I've spoken with at least 5 sound designers/engineers from different theatres who were annoyed by this problem.

SCS uses a 'low level' dB setting for determining when -infinity should be applied. Currently that 'low level' is set to -75dB, so anything below that cuts out. I'm working on changing the 'low level' setting from -75dB to -160dB, which will mean fade outs will fade down to -160dB before cutting out.

Hopefully I'll be able to provide you with a version to test in a day or two.
