auto cue numbering

Post by Ian Beeby » Sun Sep 16, 2007 4:23 pm

 I don't know if it is actually possible but, when introducing a new cue in edit mode, it would be nice if the cue numbering could progress in 5's or 10's as used to happen in old 'BASIC' program days. (younger readers might not remember BASIC. :( Ah! the good old days....) I already do this but it is a pain having to enter the cue numbers manually.
This would facilitate the addition of extra cues without having to resort to cue number 'shuffling' and could easily be amended on completion with the 'cue renumber' function already implemented.

Also, anyone know a method of PROVING to a director that the audio levels he is hearing tonight are exactly the same as he 'approved'at last nights rehearsal? I'm sure he thinks I'm sneaking back to up the gain on some of the cues! :?

Have you thought of using decimal cues? If you already have cues Q1 to Q20 but wish to interpolate a new cue between Q15 and Q16, select Q15 and add a new cue. It will be automatically be numbered Q21 but whilst editing that can easily be changed to Q15.1 to maintain its place. This doesn't really involve much shuffling and can be renumbered at the end, as you say.

Can't help you with the levels, I'm afraid.

Hi Malcolm
Thats a very fair comment, and would of course be completely workable, our lighting desk uses a similar decimal system, I just think it looks untidy and difficult to follow. It's just a matter of personal preference but I always feel happier working in integers.
Maths never was my strong point!

As for directors and their audio levels, the person who can solve THAT one stands to make a lot of money <grin>

I use 'P' labels rather than 'Q' labels, and then the number refers to the script page number that cue falls on.

If there are multiple cues on the same page in the script then I use point numbers -P54.2, P54.3 etc.

This allows you to easily see how long to 'rest' before the next sound cue. Certainly seems easier then having to understand which sound cue say Q76 falls on which page - say 109, you just have P109 as the cue label.

It seems like adding the following two pieces of functionality would give us this flexibility --

* provide an "increment" attribute in the cue renumbering screen

* detect >1 increments when creating new cues. For example, if the user explicitly names the first two cues S05 and S10, then when you create the next cue it will automatically be numbered S15. MS Excel does this when you drag-expand a set of cells.

Any thoughts Mike?
I would certainly like an cue increment value in the renumber cues page.
(Only if it's not too much trouble/work!) :?

You talked me into it

Nominating an increment is now available in the Re-Number Cues window (as at 10.5.1 RC4, now available on the Members' Download page). 'Increment detection' when adding cues is not (yet) implemented.
