Real-time Pan Control via MIDI

Post by Ondrej Holba » Thu Jul 03, 2025 7:07 pm

Hello,

would it be possible to add support for real-time Pan control via MIDI Continuous Controller (CC) messages?

Currently, Pan can only be set statically in cue properties, right? Being able to adjust it live during playback via MIDI would be very helpful for certain performance situations. Or is there already a way to achieve this?

Thank you for considering this.

Ondrej

Ondrej,

The main issue we have with changing midi values over time is that SCS doesn't know the starting point - eg the MIDI value that corresponds to the current Pan value. What make and model of mixer are you using?

Yes, I think I understand the issue. It's the same one that requires me to move the faders on the NanoKontrol before the SCS Master fader starts working, right?

I use MIDI controllers Korg NanoKontrol2 and Akai LPD8. The mixers are usually different brands, depending on the festival or theatre where we perform. The main problem is that the mixers are not always accessible from the place where I operate sound cues (especially during outdoor performances). That’s why I use the NanoKontrol and wanted to be independent when changing the PAN as well.

Anyway, I think I can use Voicemeeter to solve this issue. An external sound card could also help, but I prefer to carry as few things as possible.

Thanks,
Ondřej

Ondřej,

[UPDATED]

Use a DAW like say Reaper (others are available) to split each chanel into it's individual track creating a file for each chanel L&R. Then in SCS send each side to a different mono output from SCS. You can then use your NonoKontrol to adjust the volume of each mono chanel relative to the other. Sending it to seperate chanels on your mixing desk and have them panned fully to L/R respectively. That way you end up recombining on the mixing desk and you can adjust each chanel volume relative to the other which is kind of what adjusting a Pan pot does.

Just a thought for you.

Yes, that's the same issue. Currently we don't support operator-controlled adjustments to pan, even from the main SCS screen. You can, however, use a Level Change cue to adjust the pan over a specified time.
