Controlling playlist for cues

Post by rborsey » Tue Jul 15, 2014 6:07 pm

Maybe my use (or abuse) of SCS is a bit strange but I have a large cue file of manual cues (with some related auto start cues) which I use to run the sound and lights for musical events. My requirement is to be able to establish an editable list of the order in which manual cues should be executed instead of the default of stepping down the cue file. Eg start with cue 56, then cue 41, then cue 35 etc. I would see this as perhaps a Playlist of cues (preferably importable from a text or CSV file) which you could start just like a cue - when one cue finishes the "next manual cue" is set from the list. In an ideal world there would be a key command or clickable button to take you to the next cue in the list or take you back one cue.

Hi rborsey,
i'm not shure if i did understand your request correctly.
in most of cases you can change autocues to subcues. if done so, you can easily change the order of your cues in the editor window. they will keep their number but will be activated as next cue in the order you've sorted them.

Uwe

Hi. Oh yes I can change the order of cues and subcues in the editor window. However I have 200+ cues, most with sub-cues. I use SCS to run the pre-recorded backing tracks and lighting control midi file for my band. Each song is manually triggered (by a midi foot pedal) which starts the relevant audio and midi files running, sets up patches etc. Every gig we have a different set list and it is a seriously tedious (and risky) affair to use the SCS editor to change the cue order (ie the song order) in the Editor. So I imagined a separate list of the order in which manual cues should be executed. Eg start with Cue 65, when that finished set the next manual cue to be 92, then 31 etc.

Hope that is a bit clearer . . .

Had a thought - maybe this could be implemented using Goto cues but with some sort of offline process to edit the Goto cues. Maybe some sort of CSV import for Goto cues - if I could import a set of instructions to say create a set of auto-start goto cues (one per cue I want to set in order - each set to auto-start after a song cue) aong with the cue to goto.

There have been a few requests for something like this feature so I'll look into it soon.

Meanwhile a possible solution is to set up a second computer also running SCS and link the two with an Ethernet cable. Your main computer with all your audio files etc should be set up to accept cue control via Telnet as shown in the Help under Cue Control Devices - Telnet. So this computer will be the Telnet Server.

On the second computer you can set up a 'simple' cue file containing just Control Send cues to activate the cues you want to include in your current production. Under Production Properties you should set up a Telnet Control Send device as shown under Control Send Devices - Telnet. The only complication here is determining the IP address of your main computer. There's some info on that here. Note that this is to be run on the main computer, ie the Telnet Server computer.

Refer back to the 'Cue Control Devices - Telnet' page for details of how to format the text for the Control Send cues. Note that double quotes must be included around cue numbers in these messages.

Edit: The connection doesn't, of course, have to be Telnet. You could use MIDI or any other connection accepted both ways by SCS.

Yeah - at the moment I do something similar using the Bome midi controller software on the same PC which I trigger from a midi foot pedal. There is a playlist set up in Bome which chooses the next song. I even have a sub-cue in SCS sending a trigger out to BOME to step onto the next song so it all works but it is a bit complicated. I like to keep things as simple as possible live when my head should be full of the music!!

Anyway if this bubbles up to the top of your list it would be great!!

Cheers
