[Done] Global level edits, e.g. all cues up or down by 9dB

Post by mattdowning » Mon Jul 31, 2006 2:52 am

Hi Mike,

I usually prepare all my cues in SCS before the technical rehearsals of a show, then edit them during the tech as we go through all the cues.

Quite often I find that my cues are all too loud or too quiet, but this doesn't become evident until half way through the tech. For example, I might end up with lots of cues at very low levels e.g. -30dB and a few of the loudes ones at a medium level.

It would be nice to have a feature that could change every cue up by a certain number of dB, including level change cues, then I could push everything up to into a healthy range and turn down the amps. Of course, minus infinity dB (silent) would have to remain the same.

Of course, experience and better planning might help me more and this is not an essential request, but might be nice if you have the time one day.

Matt

Are you running thru a sound desk? If so you could adjust the trim pots on the channels you are using to give global changes.

Hi Mike,

The reason for my request is not because I actually want to make the sounds louder or quieter. It's because I want to keep the actual output levels roughly what they currently are but have more dB to play with within SCS.

E.g. I have found myself in the situation where all my SCS levels are way down at -20 to -30 dB. Now, that's my own stupid fault but it would be nice to have a facility to globally turn up all the levels by 20db so that they sit at a more sensible level and are easier to fine-tune.

I expect it would also improve the sound quality, especially for 16 bit files.

Naturally I would then have to turn down the levels on the sound desk to compensate.

In another scenario you could find that you've accidentally set all the SCS levels too high, then when you need something really loud, you've got nowhere to go (can't turn it up to 11). In that case, you'd want to globally change all the levels down by a few dB and turn the desk up.

Perhaps this need not be done within SCS - maybe it could be a script that runs over the SCS file off-line.

It's not a must-have, but when I find myself in that sort of hole, it would help to have a mechanical digger rather than just a spade.

Thanks for the extra info, Matt. That helps put the request in perspective. Having a script to process the SCS file off-line would be possible, probably using something like Perl or Python - although that then needs the relevant product to be installed.

Hi,

isn't this available as "bulk edit" in current SCS versions? Sorry to beat a dead horse and revive an ancient post, but I'm all about tying up loose ends *g*
