FADES

Mike, I appreciate the recent work you've done on fades, though now that I've used it a bit, I still have some feedback/concerns.

Fade-outs seem better, but there still is a drop off at the end (somebody else called it dropping off a cliff) of a fade, that doesn't seem to be there during fade-ins.

The logarithmic fade-outs have been corrected, and are better, though the fast part of the fade seems too fast for me. Perhaps that is personal taste? To me, it shouldn't be super fast then super slow, it should be a little faster and a little slower than a linear fade.

To me, the old logarithmic fade out speeds weren't so bad, just that the curve was reversed.

But that brings up a new problem, now the logarithmic fade-in curve is reversed. A fade-in shouldn't be slow then fast, it should be fast, then slow - just like the fade out.

Then again, I'm sure every sound tech in the world has his/her own way of fading. And I guess I can imagine situations where you might want a reverse curve. Maybe that should be a checkbox option?

Anyway, not to sound like a complainer, I really do enjoy your product - especially the personal touches and feedback opportunities available here.

I work on a live semi-improvised serial theater show, with new shows every week. So I typically have about 2 days to put together the music and sound effects after I get the script. I can't imagine doing that without SCS.

You shouldn't be getting a drop-off at the end of a fade out with the new log-fade (or with the linear fade). I'll email you directly regarding this.

Seems like we need more options on fades. I've had a look at some of the maths involved in changing the steepness of the curve and I'll see if I can incorporate more options in the next version.

It would be great if one could edit the actual fades, but I'm aware this may be too much work and too close to a sound editing app. But some choices at least would be nice. Have a look at CD Architect, they have 5 or 6 "preset" fades available that get the job done 98% of the time. I'm sure other apps have similar options.

If you are already planning to have a graphical (waveform) display of the sound files (in ver. 9), perhaps you could tack some of the fade control functions to that?
