New Cue Type

Post by Falko Heidemann » Sat Nov 06, 2021 7:45 pm

I sometimes work with musicians who use Ableton live.
There are always situations where music transitions should be beat-accurate but dynamic.
For ableton no problem for scs a bit more difficult.
It is clear to me that abelton is made for exactly this.
But I don't want to switch.

That's why I thought that a new cue type could help.
A cue type "Manual (GO on next Cue Marker of Cue X)" would be the solution.
You would only have to mark the bars in the Song Manuel with cue stamps.
For example:
Q1(with markers) plays. I press Go Q2 (with the new cue type) and Q2 does not start playing until the next marker is reached in Q1.

best regards Falko

I've got good news for you, Falko. That feature's already available. Using your example, set the Activation Method of Q2 to 'On Cue Marker'. That will give you a drop-down list from which you select the required cue marker. See Cue Properties, particularly the 'On Cue Marker' choice available under 'Activation'.

I'll post a separate topic under 'Tips and Tricks' showing an example from a production I've just completed, where I had 5 lighting cues being triggered from 5 cue markers in an audio file cue that played 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree'. This was a dance item and 3 of the lighting cues were chases so timing was critical.

Hi Mike, thank you for your answer.
your suggestion is not exactly what I mean.
I need a way to start the cue 2 dynamically to the beat of cue 1.
Depending on when something happens on stage,
it can be marker 1,2,3 .... to start cue 2.
So when the marker 1 is already over and I press GO, the cue should start with marker 2. If this is already over then the start should take place at cue 3 etc.
All later markers are then ignored.

Sorry there is an error in the description

So when the marker 1 is already over and I press GO, the cue should start with marker 2. If this is already over then the start should take place at MARKER 3 etc.

So what you want is effectively an Activation Method of 'On Next Cue Marker'. The cue would be manually started but then placed in a pending state until the next cue marker in the designated audio file cue was encountered.

For example, suppose Q1 is an audio file cue with cue markers at 5 seconds, 10 seconds and 15 seconds, and Q2 is any type of cue but has an activation method of 'On Next Cue Marker' with Q1 selected. If Q2 is manually started about 8 seconds after Q1 was started, then Q2 is initially set in a Pending state until the 10-second cue marker is encountered. At that point, Q2 fully starts.

This seems a very specific requirement. Is this a common requirement with your musicians?

Yes, your example is exactly what I mean.
At German theatres it is not very special and rare.
Unfortunately, most theatre and theatre musicians in Germany work with Ableton.
The main function of Ableton is to implement musically correct transitions. This cannot currently be replicated with SCS.
With the described cue function this would work.
It would then be possible to adapt song material produced with "Abelton Live" into SCS without any problems.
