Program Failing to Load (video codec error)

For some reason SCS performance mode isn't loading properly (icons and buttons replaced by a black bar), and all videos and images are failing to be shown.
This window pops up at the beginning suggesting I need to install LAVfilters - but all installed
I have
- uninstalled and reinstalled SCS (both 32 and 64 bit versions)
- shut off PC and rebooted
- uninstalled and reinstalled LAV codec pack - both through SCS installer and seperately.
The curious thing is that in design mode, the editor is perfectly willing to show me the files I am supposed to be loading. Occasionally the program stutters and a black box appears on the right hand side.
This happens no matter what production file I try to load, including the demo file that comes with the program... all started when an audio sub-cue failed to load and the program crashed. I realise this must be an issues with my computer but I cannot for the life of me work out what isn't loading or working properly.
Any help on this would be great - thanks
