Subroutines

Post by Boswell » Sat Dec 04, 2010 11:00 pm

Hi Mike,
A long while ago, I suggested the ability within the editor to be able to call control cues in the same manner as a subroutine, so that the cue only has to be setup/defined once. (I can’t find my original post!)
I use SCS extensively to control mics/groups on a K2 sound desk via MIDI. I have control cues to mute all the float mics, and another to unmute them, same for groups of actors or individuals. These same control cues are repeated many times within a show and it means either individually typing them in or copy & paste. I can live with that.
But if I need to change a reoccurring cue for some reason, e.g. I decide at the tech rehearsal that the downstage choir mics are not required but the upstage ones are. I have to individually edit each occurrence of it.
If a control cue could be defined in one place then called as required in the manner of a subroutine, then only one edit is required instead of many.
The subroutines could be given meaningful names ie Float ON, Float OFF, Choir ON, Choir OFF, Merry Men ON, Merry Men OFF (It’s Panto time!)
It would also allow you to programme SCS much earlier before the mic channels were assigned and then put the assignments into the subroutines at a much later date.
As you have other requests to run executables or scripts http://www.showcuesystems.com/forum/vie ... 1387#p4675
and a similar suggestion in http://www.showcuesystems.com/forum/vie ... ?f=1&t=977
Could I request that you consider including subroutines in SCS11? This is of course assuming that other users think it would be of use.
I hope I have explained myself clearly
Keep up the good work
Boswell
regards
Boswell

Check out Palladium - it's Australian software and my understanding is that the developer is planning to make it compatible with SCS once SCS has live sound control capability using SoundMan-Server... Should be good!

SCS does already include Palladium support. Under General Options / MIDI Devices & Control, in the Control Method drop-down list you can select Palladium. Also, from the Palladium web site you can download playback files for SCS - see Palladium Files and click on the link for 'SCS'.

Maybe that "palladium" is the right tool for what the boswell wants to do - but as already requested in other threads, a "GoSub" or "Call" queue would be most welcome to me, too. My example is like this here: http://www.showcuesystems.com/forum/vie ... p=697#p697 A lot of Telephone calls and Door bells.

I see that this can be done via Hotkey as described by Mike in the following posting. But I don't like the idea to have to resort to "hotkey" queues. I usually follow through the script by reading my notes in SCS, if I need to "fire" a Telephone queue, I want to fire it by pressing the space key (i.e. Go-Button).

It could be something like the goto queue (maybe even an Option of the goto queue) to go to another queue and return to the Queue after the Goto/Gosub queue.

Pretty pretty please give us a feature like this, Mike - there are people around asking for this kind of thing since 2006...

thanks for giving us a great tool - I appreciate what you do, because I tried to write my own program for this use before... It had a lot less features and was ultimately in a place where I would have needed to rewrite the whole thing. Thats when I found SCS!

I have found SCS to be great when I'm working corporate A/V gigs and using it to control my projectors switchers and play video SCS has saved my bacon many times, in fact I often find myself wishing I had more com ports. I have had the displeasure of using LCS a few times and find it a nightmare to program but on thing that I did like was the "subcue library" it made it possible to build all the control actions and then put them into cues. his would be great as I often have to switch to the same input many times and have to give the take command even more. Also it would be great for things like Game Shows where I need to use the same sound effect repeatedly. Also it would be very powerful to be able to import and export parts on the subcue library to make building shows quick and easy.
