ADAT Soundcards/devices

Post by dikt » Tue Aug 08, 2006 7:03 pm

Hi. I have been using SCS for some time now with an M-Audio Firewire 410 - with great success. I use a Yamaha 01V96 digital mixer which has adat input and it seemed a logical next step to use this method to transfer 8 audio channels from PC to mixer without all the "wires". I have bought an M-Audio Firewire 1814 which has this facility. I have set this up with Wavelab and played 8-channel montages no problem. I use the M-Audio FW ASIO device that Wavelab 'sees' and then configure the Wavelab channels to the ADAT output channels 1 to 8. This works great. BUT I can't do this from SCS. When setting up a show, the output options seen by SCS are M-Audio FW 1814 ADAT, M-Audio FW 1814 MULTI, M-Audio FW 1814 1/2, M-Audio FW 1814 3/4. (these last 2 are analogue). I am assuming that I could play back a multi-channel audio file through the ADAT or MULTI outputs ... but I don't want this - I want to be able to use the ADAT outputs as 4 sets of 2-channel pairs. Is there any way ??

Currently SCS does not support ASIO output. This is on the list of features to be added but the internal programming changes are quite significant.

I'd welcome comments from other users regarding how useful ASIO support would be in SCS.

ASIO support

Very useful!

In fact, the DIGI002R seems to work with the MME-driver on the first two outputs.
And that's way not enough.

ASIO with MOTU Taveller and Yamaha 01V96

Post by Jeroen Wuyts » Sun Mar 18, 2007 12:31 am

Asio support would be usefull to be able to use the high quality MOTU Traveller via ADAT towards my 01V96.

It would also be nice to do all this on my MacBook Pro.
XP on this new Intel system works, but I rather keep in on the OSX installation.

Soon?

I am also buying a Yamaha 01v96 and would know to know if ADAT PCI cards will work as an 8-channel sound card for SCS. This thread wasn't clear on whether it would work or not. Does anyone know?

I use O1V/96 and RME fireface400. ADAT sends on RME work, but funny. I use ADAT outs 3-8 on stereo devices 2-4. and spdif out on stereo device 5. Otherwise strange things happen. For example if I put ADAT 1-2 on device 5, it starts to hom after fireing an audio cue. If I put ADAT 1-2 on first stereo device, some error message is shown.
In conclusion: You I can use 4 stereo digital outs from my RME

Mike, do you have any info here on what ADAT cards the BASS driver will support? I will need to access all 8 channels of output -- and my plan would be to play 5.1 on six of those channels.

Thanks. John

No info on ADAT support, John. Do you have a shortlist of ADAT cards you are considering?

From what I have found in other cards, to play 5.1 on six of the channels you will need to join those channels in the device's driver. You can then play a 5.1 file to that six-channel output in SCS. To access an individual channel within those six you would need to nominate the relevant speaker.

I haven't really looked, Mike, but a quick check on froogle.com shows that Lynx seems to be one of the few providers. They have an "LS" card with two ins and two outs -- much like the Yamaha's MY16AT expansion card.

I guess there are a couple of different ways to play multi-channel sound tracks.

- One way is to send the single audio track into the card and let the card split the sound into it's discrete channels.

- The other way is to have the software driver break it up into discrete channels and the card just operates the individual channels. Does the BASS driver handle breaking up multi-channel audio tracks, or is it passing that through to the card?

Thanks. John

I can play multitrack (5.1) wave with RME fireface 400. RME plays 6 channels to analog outs 1-6 but I can rout them from RME softmixer to adat outs. Interleaved has to be cheked from card driver window

Not sure. I believe BASS breaks up the channels as there is a flag to swap the use of channels 3-4 with 5-6, due to the channel numbering in 5.1 outputs. On the other hand the documentation states that "Except on Vista, to use multi-channel streams in Windows requires the output device to have WDM drivers installed." This seems to imply the WDM drivers will be handling the split.

With ASIO support (coming in the next major release of SCS) the outputs are definitely split as all ASIO channels are mono and so stereo and other multi-channel outputs are supported by "joining" the required number of mono channels.

Mike,

Good to hear you've sorted out doing ASIO - but a plea - PLEASE don't make the same mistale Adobe made with Audition 2.0 and remove native support for WDM drivers!

There are loads of us who use theatres where all they have is a soundblaster or on-board AC97 chipset and in many cases installing ASIO4ALL would not be allowed by the local IT people.

Also, you can only have one ASIO device active on a system at a time - so being able to use an ASIO device alongside WDM would be useful -which reminds me - you really need to provide a configurable delay buffer for the ASIO channels to align the latency of the channels if used alongside WDM.

Thanks,

Dave

WDM support will continue alongside ASIO. btw, I should have mentioned that ASIO support will require an SCS Professional Plus license.

Thanks for the tip about only one ASIO device allowed active at a time - I was not aware of that.

I'll run some tests using ASIO and WDM in the same production. I understand the need for a configurable delay buffer, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to implement this. This would only be necessary for users who want more outputs than they have available on the ASIO device they are using, and only if they want to play an audio file thru ASIO and WDM devices simultaneously.
