Workaround for SQS ==> Dante ==> Yamaha TF1

Hello

I am a technician for lights in the theater and so far I only have simple playback for vocals or sounds.
I am delighted to get to know sqs and learn how easily and quickly you can solve all this tasks live

My first big challenge is already there:
I have to turn on the lights and the sound for a musical. 6 singers and actors.
Spoken text, singing, lighting, playback and mute microphones.
I am now at the limit of my possibilities and close to heart attack.

I hope SQS will save me and I thank Mike Daniell infinitely for his support.

For this Show, i get a Yamaha TF1 with a Dante card for work.
I have the Behringer X32 myself and quickly find my way around the Yamaha TF1.

Now it would be extremely helpful for me if I could output the playbacks and noises with SQS ==> Dante ==> TF1
and also mute individual microphones when the actors are not on stage.

I'm not sure I understood the way. is mute only possible with midi?
Or can I use a W10 laptop and a network cable to connect to the Dante card in TF1 and control everything from SQS?

Is there a workaround for this i can easy understand?
Has anyone done this before?
I am grateful for every tip ...

Thanks and Greetings to all Erwin

For the output of your playbacks your computer must have a dante virtual soundcard ( a lifetime licence is about 30 dollars) and you send your audio with via the ethernetport to your next dante- node, which is the tf1. I am not sure that you can control channel-mutes via scs and dante. You still can use midi for the mutes.

Hello

The Yamaha TF1 has no midi :-(

According to the description, the more expensive SQS version supports:
Control Send Cues - Network (Telnet / UDP)

I already have the laptop with the 30-day version of Dante VIA tied together.
As far as I understand, I configured it and it works.
I see the two channels SQS / L and SQS / R in Dante.
The music started in SQS is played through the Yamaha TF1. So far OK.

For the MUTE stories I have now 46 scenes saved directly in the Yamaha TF1.
So I click on 3 different buttons:
One for Mute and Level - Scene on Yamaha TF1
One in SQS for playback
and One at the Light-Desk.
That can work and I'll practice it a few more times until the next show.

But there is one thing that worries me a lot:
When programming the SQS sound cues, fade-out and so on, I regularly
lost the connection from SQS and didn't hear any sound.
When I quit SQS and restarted it worked again.

Once I heard sound distorted like a chainsaw.
After restarting SQS everything was fine again.

I am now seriously asking myself.
Why do I need Dante when I only get a simple stereo signal ???
I can also easily connect the audio output on the laptop to an audio input
on the mixer and save myself the entire DANTE installation and costs ???
And of course the connection problems / interruptions recognized here.

The only reason for DANTE would be the requirement for output to multiple loudspeakers / monitoring.
So far I have not been able to set this in SQS or in DANTE, I only see a stereo port
and not all of the output ports of the Yamaha TF1.

Does anyone know how i can make visible the Output-Ports from TF1 in DANTE and make visible
this Ports in SQS so i can set this Ports for individual Sound-Cues?

Does anyone from the users know whether the SQS offer: "Control Send Cues - Network (Telnet / UDP)"
works reliably?
(Because the Yamaha TF1 does not have a mini connector)

Hi Erwin,
i use scs with a behringer X-air18 as a soundcard AND Mixer (via USB), and since the some months i used it i never had a problem with connection. You can try that with the TF1 (USB-Host, which then should appear as a 34in/34out Soundcard).
And ofcourse, you still could use your mini-jack-output to go directly in the TF1.
For the network commands, there is already the documentation: https://showcuesystems.com/scs11help Editor > Control Send cues > Control send network, where we learn that commands use osc (open sound control). Now you need to find the corresponding commands for your TF1. In this document : https://download.yamaha.com/files/tcm:39-1286035 you find a setup guide for Qlab and the TF1. The procedure should be more or less the same for scs. At page 13 you see some osc commands (forget about the python-script). To turn on or off, it's something like that: "MIXER:Current/InCh/Fader/On 0 0 1" which you would write into the field: OSC message. You need to get the syntax right.
Hope that helps.

Hello Vis Comica

Thanks a lot for the tips I will try it out well for the next few days.
I have just worked with SQS for 5 hours, connected the TF1 with Dante to my laptop via the network.

The laptop is W10, brand new and very powerful. Nothing else installed yet except Windows10, Dante and SQS.

I have now also succeeded in connecting a USB / MIDI adapter, it works immediately without any problems and without an extra driver.
I use it to send Midi Show Control (GO) to my lighting control desk. It works fine.

But a very big problem :-(
SQS loses connection to Dante every 10-15 minutes :-(
The MIDI controller also regularly dies.

Quit SQS and restart SQS, then the connection to Dante will work again for 10 minutes.
Even the USB-Midi Controller.

It's a drama, so I can't work on stage :-(
Tomorrow I will immediately try your suggestion and connect the TF1 to the USB Host
and deinstall Dante !
I am now convinced that Dante is causing all the problems.

With an extra controller: Midi / Relay, I can switch the scenes (mute) on the TF1 and do not need Dante control over the TF1
I will write what I found in the end as a solution for other users with similar problems.

Thanks Erwin

Maybe you should also look into this, if you have trouble with an USB-Device connected.

Hello Vis Comica

Thank you for the USB info, i didn't know this.
I switched off what felt like 100 options in W10 so as not to experience any surprises during a performance ...
I have now changed that USB-Option, to avoid this problem in the future.

But it was not relevant because the biggest problem was the connection to the TF1 with Dante,
which was interrupted again and again when editing and working quickly.

As I announced yesterday, I have uninstalled Dante and connected SQS to the usb host.
For other Interrestet People: it needs free "Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver" on Yamaha Webpage.
And really, it works great with no crash or loss of connection.
USB won't be the problem.

With usb host,
I have access to all channels, I tested it, sent music from SQS on to different input channels on TF1
and it works fine.

My own mixer (not using in the actual Show) is an X32 and it has MIDI :-)
I will test later whether I can mute the microphone inputs of X32 via midi.
It would be attractive if I could control mute, and control snibble strips and so on
in the X32 by using Dante with SQS.

My workaround today is:
-The light desk is controlled via MIDI and Control Send Cues.
- The sound files are played by SQS
- For the triggers I use an external keyboard from Infnitton, because on a laptop I repeatedly touch the touchpad when I press the space key.
- The mutes are saved as scenes on the TF1, the foot switch is configured for "Read and execute next scene"
A "midi relay" receives the GO command from SQS and switches the TF1 foot switch for next Scene.

Now i only use one button ;-)
and just concentrate on the stage, script and the sound mix.

Thanks for your help Erwin

I'll give you feedback again.
The connection between SQS and TF1 with USB host is stable the last 2 Day...
I'm not sure where the Dante problem was causing.

I will have the opportunity to test the SQS - Dante - Behringer X32 with the same laptop.
If this connection is stable, it is decided that the problem is not SQS and not laptop,
but the Dante card in TF1 or TF1 itself for bug in firmware.

Now I am using the Behringer X32, have updated to SCS Professional Plus
and use network control send commands with built-in Ethernet card
and i send music via built-in Dante card and virtual soundcard software on the laptop.

To connect this two network ports on the X32 I have to use a network switch.

Everything works, Erwin
