Using videos

Although I’ve used the sound on SCS for some time I’ve just started with videos.
When I import a clip (I’m using .avi files) sometimes they only play the sound, either on my computer screen or on the projector – doesn’t make a difference. I can’t see any difference between files which do play in the editor and ones which don’t and in fact sometimes the same files don’t and then do play. What am I doing wrong?
