Converting to digital mixer

Post by diggermel » Wed Nov 17, 2010 5:03 pm

Hi,

We're looking to upgrade to a digital mixer, either a Presonus StudioLive 24.4.2, or maybe a Yamaha ?
We would like to have SCS control the board Q's.
I understand this is usually done using a midi interface.

Does anyone have experience with interfacing between digital desks and SCS ?
Any comments on what digital desk you're using ?

Many thanks

David

Hi,

I'm using M7CL connected via ADAT and MIDI daily. Often used faders are assigned to MIDI controllers. All other functions can be controlled by MIDI sysex data. You have to enter these manually :-( Capturing incoming MIDI messenges into the editor would be a nice feature (I asked Mike for this some time ago :-))

I too have controlled the Yamaha M7CL via a USB Midi interface cable connected to my laptop. Successfully controlled Channels On/Off and fader levels. Very easy to setup, but needed to follow the Yamaha user guide to ensure correct Midi Channels where assigned. Cues within SCS where then set upto switch on (or off) individual or groups of channels. Thus able to easily control 14 radio mics, 4 floor mics and 2 Back stage mics throughout the show.

Hope this helps

Simon

Anyone got experience with a digital mixer that's cheaper than the M7CL? What about the Yamaha 01V96VCM?

Hallo Mike and all,

it should work with every digital Yamaha mixer, even with the Promix01 :-) (this is tested).
All necessary information can be found in the manuals. Have a look here: http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/downloads ... index.html. Search for the MIDI chapter within the manual.

There are also some analogue mixers, which offer some control possibilities, i.e. one can mute/ unmute channels on the Soundcraft K2 via note on/ note off commands, and mute scenes can be recalled with program change messages.

I have a Tascam DM-24 that I have been using with SCS for over 2 years.

Previously I used Bome's MIDI Translator to translate the DM-24s transport functions to SCS; but the most recent version responds to MIDI Machine Control (MMC) commands directly. This allows me to start and stop cues and move up or down the cue list from the DM-24 controls.

I can also use MIDI messages from SCS to control the DM-24 input channel MUTEs. MIDI Controller 11 operates Channel 1-16 MUTEs and Controller 85 operates Channel 17-32 MUTEs. A data value of "127" MUTES the corresponding channel, and "0" UN-MUTES it. This is useful for selecting the appropriate mics. for each musical numbers, for instance.
