Re: Buying a new laptop... advice?

Should be fine. I know that running cues from an SD card (which is effectively a solid state drive) works well and reduces latency compared to a hard disk drive.
Bawlmersound wrote: Also, unfortunately, I am finding that Firewire interfaces are becoming a little scarce in laptops. Will I have to replace my beloved Firebox?
I've noticed that myself. Here's a useful link I found: Doesn't anyone make Firewire laptops?. The posting from 'freefallfly' provides a reasonable explanation, and the topic also lists some laptops that do provide a firewire interface. However, with the speed at which manufacturers replace their product range, some these models may now be obsolete.

Hi all
Thinking of getting one of these http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite-mk3 to use 6 outputs from 6 separate music/fx tracks......is there anything I should know regarding setting up the outputs. Will be using via USB so will have the external psu connected too

Probably using a laptop with win7 i5 processor but could use with a laptop with XP 32bit too

Cheers
Jon

Hi folks,

not really audio, but perhaps it might be useful: rtpMIDI by Tobias Erichsen. It's a network MIDI driver to avoid long MIDI cables. After a short test it seems to work fine with SCS 11.2.5.

Behringer FCA610 10-channel USB/Firewire external audio interface with ASIO drivers - $200

http://amzn.to/OqiYOs

The output level of channels 1-2 is controlled by two knobs on the front - Mix needs to be all the way clockwise, then the rightmost knob controls output level. This threw me for a couple of minutes. Channels 9-10 are SPDIF coaxial or optical out - I used a gizmo to convert this to analog L/R output: http://amzn.to/OqjdZR

This device defaults to the Firewire interface. To switch to USB, unplug the power from the device, hold down the digital select button and plug power back in WHILE STILL HOLDING THE DIGITAL SELECT BUTTON IN until the power-on self test completes and all the lights flash. Then the light should stay blue. I have not had any issues with the device - it stays in USB mode even after lost power and I am running a 9-channel show with a lot of concurrency.

Behringer FCA610 -- I can second that. Got mine gently used on Amazon for ~$160. The drivers are hard to find on the Behringer page but I found and installed them. Running under Win7 on a Dell M65 with (only) 2GB of memory without issues. When one of the tech people at the Arts Center where we produce saw it, he wanted me to get one (and a copy of SCS) for them. Wants me to use all 10 outputs when I do The Farnsworth Invention in a few months.

Working on a daily basis:
M-audio C 600 (Avid) Asio and WDM supported, 4 ch on USB bus power, 6ch with external power supply.

Audinate DANTE Virtual sound card, depending on processor power (tested 10ch playback over Cat5e, HP ProBook 450G2 laptop: Win10, i5 processor, 8Gb RAM, Soundcraft Si series with DANTE card) ASIO and WDM/DirectSound
https://www.audinate.com/products/softw ... -soundcard

If Cat5 cable is unplugged, re-plugging will take 5-10 seconds to re-establish connection without need to quit or restart SCS!
If there is dual LAN port on the computer or Yamaha AIC128-D Dante accelerator card it is possible to make redundant connection with most of the other Dante enabled equipment!

Soundcraft MADI USB COMBO add-on card for Si series, ASIO and WDM supported 32ch multichannel on USB (tested flawless 6ch playback). http://www.soundcraft.com/products/Si-Option-Cards
In case of lost USB connection (or mixer restart) SCS should be restarted (11.4.1)

Hi folks,

purchased a Yamaha 01V96i mixer and found it working very nice with additional Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver. 16 channels audio and MIDI over a single USB cable. The 01V96i can route incoming MIDI from USB to its MIDI out, so that other MIDI interface may be not necessary.

I just purchased a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. It's not recognizing the driver. Error message is that the drivers are all in use?? Any help will be appreciated, so I don't have to come out of the computer's headphone jack. R

I did a production 2 years ago using a Focusrite Saffire 40 via FireWire using a windows 7 Laptop.
Very successful, using 4 channels of audio via 4 different speakers around the stage and auditorium.

Not sure if this has been added but I wanted to attest to the working of the

Avid Venue SC48 Remote running through firewire into a Syba SY-PEX30016 3 Port Firewire 1394B & 1394A PCIe 1.1 x1 Card TI XIO2213B Chipset (http://a.co/91e4a15)
on Windows 7(x64) Enterprise

Works great and I get 32ch both ways (ASIO-BASS 1500ms) so I can run Protools and SCS off the same cable and everything is clocked together. Can even run 3 different audio programs at the same time with no issues given the right CPU/Mem/Mobo combo.

On the lower-priced end of the spectrum, I just got the Sewell 7.1 USB Soundcard (SW-29545) to work..... after taking WAY too long to remember to change the default sound setting (in Windows) for the device from stereo to one of the surround choices!

Currently running 11.6.2rc3 on an HP laptop running Windows 10. I did have to download the Windows 10 driver from Sewell, as the supplied driver wouldn't install.
