Hi all, I apologize if this has already been discussed but my searches have come up fruitless. I am doing a show at the end of the month that has a cue that I would like to playback to 10 different outputs. I am mixing on a VI 1 and have available inputs and outputs. In the past, I have used my M Audio device to output to each input and route the mixer outputs accordingly, but that is a fire wire device and limited to 8 channels. The new computer at the theatre is lacking fire wire. The VI 1 and stage box have madi and Aviom cards installed.
Is it possible to use 10 channels of the madi stream as a virtual sound card accessed through my network connection?
Thanks in advance for your time,
ed
Can i use a Soundcraft VI 1 for multi channel playback
Re: Can i use a Soundcraft VI 1 for multi channel playback
Hi,
if you need to simply playback a cue to 10 outputs, you could do all the routing in the Vi1 and use MIDI to switch between snapshots or mutes on the Vi1 to change the routing between the cues. If you need to playback 10 discrete channels of audio from the SCS to the Vi1 at the same time, MADI is a good option, but you won't be able to connect the stage box at the same time, because the Vi1 has only one card slot which can accept only one (redundant) MADI stream.
You could in theory use a MADI router to combine the streams coming from the stage box and from the MADI interface (SCS), but I'm not sure which (if any) routers will properly handle the data for the preamp control etc.
There is no "virtual sound card" for MADI, you'll need a real MADI interface.
I think that an analog connection is going to be cheaper than anything else, but if you want to go digital, you could probably add an ADAT card to the stagebox or AES/EBU card that replaces some of the analog I/O on the surface, although I've never seen one of those, only read about it in a catalog.
