multitrack Wav playback

Post by Kalle » Tue Mar 14, 2006 12:52 am

I have an 8 output soundcard Echo Layla 24 and i´m having a problem with multitrack wav playback. It only plays back front left and right cannel of the file. How can I play 6 channel wav file to separete outputs?. For example 1-2 to Left and right, 3-4 to rear L and rear R and so on...

Kalle,

Under View / Options / Sound Devices, what devices get listed in the Physical Sound Device drop-down list? If you can only see devices like outputs 1/2, outputs 3/4, etc then the driver is only publishing the output pairs. If you also have a device setting for multiple outputs (on the Echo card) then that is the one you should select for a 6-channel wave file as that should address all the outputs.

SCS can only play to physical devices as published by the driver. So if you can only see output pairs then a compromise would be to re-create the wave file as 3 separate stereo files if you have the original tracks or some way to extract the channels. Channels 1 and 2 should be in the first file, 3 and 4 in the second, and 5 and 6 in the third. Make sure the 3 files are exactly the same length (same number of samples). Set up a cue for each file, directing the 'stereo' outputs as required. The second and third cues should be set to auto-start 0.00 seconds after the start of the first cue. Provided the three files have the same duration, SCS will link them in the audio library routines, which provides good synchronisation.

Thanks for reply!
We tried the first solution but somehow couldn´t get it to work (SCS saw the device 1-6 in the sound device menu but still played back only 2 first tracks of the multitrack wav). But still it seems to be just the program we need, thanks!

Hi again. We now have problem with the new soundcard in our computer. The card is RME hammerfall HDSP 9632. I hoped to use the 8 ADAT outputs of the card but with this card SCS does not recognise or play multitrack wav (with Layala 24 and M-audio fw 410 everything works fine). Separate stereo outs work ok. The RME does not seem to have multi otput support, however the PowerDVD program plays the 5.1 audio file ok. Is the problem with the card or could SCS decode multitrack wav for RME?

I'd say it's not the card. I will consider providing this feature as an enhancement, but it will be a while before I will be able to implement it.

ADAT or Hammerfall?

So, you might provide the ability to do ADAT or the ability to work with a Hammerfall card specifically? Are there any ADAT cards that DO work?
