Noise over my file (fix in 10.1.0)

Post by Neil Fisher » Wed May 14, 2008 12:31 pm

hello all,

I'm having a problem and hope someone can help me.

I'm trying to play a 1.1Gig file, sample rate 44100, 24 bit, 70 minutes.
I can hear the file from FOHL+R, Foldback, Surround and Centre. However there is noise over the track, sounds a bit like compression/wind/digital feedback.
I can open the same file in other programs and there is no noise (both on Mac and PC)

I'm open to suggestions.
Neil

Hi Neil,

Sorry - no idea where your noise is coming from, but one thing to check:

SCS is able to remember and force the recall of the settings from your computer's software audio mixer so as any adjustments you made while VOIPing last night or whatever don't affect your sound playback. Maybe it has saved a windows mixer setup with one of the other sources (internal mic if a laptop, CD in, or whatever) open flat out.
Also, given it's such a big file, it will be exercising the Hard Disk quite hard, and some computers with internal soundcards have been known to get a little data-type noise (like a modem) at a low level superimposed over the audio - this is due to bad filtering in the Power Supply, especially when under load. If you're using an internal card - maybe do a test with an external USB powered one - preferrably with it's own PSU rather than buss-powered.

You didn't say if only that file had the noise and other soundfiles played clean.

Cheers,
nick

It might also help to know your soundcard details, the version of SCS, the SCS Audio Driver settings (buffers etc.) and the programs which play the file cleanly (presumably in your SCS computer, since you mention Mac and PC).

I've been in touch with Neil about this issue and the outcome is as follows:
  • Neil was originally using an AIF file but when he replaced that by a WAV file then the file played perfectly. For the production Neil is working on he is now using WAV files exclusively.
  • It appears that some AIF files will give noise when played by SCS 9, due to a problem in the audio library. SCS 10 will use a newer version of the audio library which contains a fix for this.
So, if you have AIF files then you may find they do not play properly in SCS 9. The solution for SCS 9 is to convert the files to another format, eg WAV. When SCS 10 is released you should find your AIF files play correctly.
