Editing a show on the road.

Post by Swizzle » Mon Feb 11, 2008 9:28 am

Hi, I', not sure if this has been answered, or has been asked before, but I can't seem to see if it has or not.

On the lead up to a show, I work on my rig pc in the studio getting the basis of the show together, then when the rig is installed but i still want to edit the show after a long night but would rather not sit in an empty hall, can I copy the production folder to my laptop and edit without it changing many things?

The only problem I can see is my laptop wont have the firepod connected and probably will change all the outputs etc.
I use multiple outs but when tweaking the show, i don't want it to save with just a single stereo output.

Is this the case or is there anyway around it?
What do others do for mobile editing whilst away from the theatre?

The mapping of the sound devices is a bit awkward in SCS 9 (this will be addressed in SCS 10) but you should not lose the device settings on the cues. For example, if you have devices named FOH, Rear and US Left assigned to vaious outputs on your firepod, then when you load up the production on your laptop you should be able to assign all three devices to the default device on your laptop. The production will still have the three 'sound devices', but they will all play thru the same physical device on your laptop. Then when you have made your cue changes and transferred the production back to the theatre PC you can re-assign your sound devices to the required firepod outputs.

The important point here is that it is only the Production Properties that have to be changed to match the physical device(s) available. The 'sound device' selections in cues will continue to use their logical names, eg FOH, etc.

I haven't had to do this myself very much as I usually use my laptop for both design and production, so to be safe I suggest you backup your cue file (the .scs file) or if necessary the entire produciton folder, before you replace the file or folder with an updated version.

I'll throw in my two cents: this kind of two-computer operation is how I built the last show I worked on (the theatre's computer was a desktop that I didn't feel like lugging around, and I didn't have a key for the building) and I had absolutely zero problems with it aside from what was mentioned above about having to update the Production Properties depending on which computer you are on.

The only advice I would give you is that, unless you're changing the sound files themselves, rather than copying the production folder back and forth between computers, I found it was enough just to have an identical copy of the sound files on each machine, and then all you have to do is copy the (relatively small) .scs file back and forth, rather than copying the (relatively large) production folder back and forth every time you change a cue.
