Multiple outputs - non surround sound

Post by howartp » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:25 am

Hi,

I've got a Pantomime coming up February 10th, which has a bird flying over the audience helicopter style.

I bought an Terratec Aureon 7.1 PCI sound card during the summer and installed it, but never tested it for functionality.

I've been up tonight and played around, and come across a problem.

I can send the audio to the correct speakers, but it is only sending the bass to the subwoofer output, so I have a high-pitched bird out of three of the four speaker sets, and a very low pitched bird from the fourth!

Is this the same with all 7.1 cards, or do I just need a better card? Any recommendations?

I have another sound card onboard, which I am using for the remaining non-panning effects, to save having to set levels for each effect to each speaker which would take a while. It's just a basic Mic/LineIn/LineOut card.

I need to send the full audio mix (treble/bass) to each speaker in turn, to fly the bird/helicopter over the audience, back to front.

(I spent £550 on a new Mixer with enough outputs to support this multi-output sound effect last week, so I need to get this working!)

Thanks,

Peter

Peter, did you ever get this working? I know in other posts they mention setting the floating point mode, etc, to un-jam the sound cards ... don't know if that solved your problem or not.

I am about top buy my sound card, and looking at Turtle Beach Montego they claim that their card will not necessarily handle piping different audio tracks to different speakers. So I'm curious to hear if you got around this and were able to overlay multiple cues on top of each other, going to different outputs.

Thanks. John

Hi John,

Sorry I didn't reply - I mustn't have set the thread to send me emails when people reply.

I normally do.

I realised the problem was because I was using stereo output from the 7.1 card into a mono mixer, so only the mono side played. I just bought a few stereo-mono adapters which sent both sides onto the mono (left) signal.

For future users, I have had to replace the Terratec card, because it was causing BSOD's (Blue Screen of Death's) and constant reboots.

Peter.
